He was a practising accountant for over 20 years in Malaysia and the USA where he audited several Fortune 500 companies and was the Chairman and Managing Partner of Ernst & Young in Malaysia for almost a decade where his experience included inter alia the re-domiciliation of foreign public listed companies to Malaysia, corporatisation and privatisation of government entities and IPOs. He also served as the President of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (which is a statutory body under the Ministry of Finance) from its dormancy in 1987 and led the Institute for thirteen years to 2000 to become a vibrant, dynamic, professional and full-fledged regulatory body of accountants. Datuk Hanifah is the Founder of NexG Berhad (“NexG”). He served as the first Managing Director/CEO of NexG until his retirement on 31 January 2020 to further his studies. Upon completion of his further studies, Datuk Hanifah returned to NexG on 14 September 2022 as the Executive Deputy Chairman/ CEO and was later redesignated as Executive Chairman/CEO on 29 September 2022. On 26 July 2023, Datuk Hanifah had offered to be redesignated to Executive Deputy Chairman/CEO again to make way for YM Tengku Dato’ Seri Abu Bakar Ahmad to assume the Executive Chairmanship on the same day. Subsequently, Datuk Hanifah retired on 29 February 2024. Datuk Hanifah rejoined NexG on 22 August 2024 as the Executive Deputy Chairman/CEO and was subsequently redesignated to Executive Chairman/CEO on 12 February 2025 upon the retirement of YM Tengku Dato’ Seri Abu Bakar Ahmad. On 27 March 2026, Datuk Hanifah had offered himself to be redesignated from Executive Chairman/CEO to Executive Deputy Chairman/CEO of the Company in order for Dato’ Haji Ishak bin Ismail to assume the Executive Chairmanship on the same day. During his professional life, he had also previously served on the boards of several public listed companies, government-linked companies and government committees as well as international organisation of accountants.
