MISC Annual Report 2018
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR OUR BUSINESS OUR LEADERSHIP OUR PERFORMANCE OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY OUR GOVERNANCE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS OTHER INFORMATION 50 TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 165 MISC BERHAD ANNUAL REPORT 2018 164 OUR SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS 2018 ENVIRONMENT Our Marine and Heavy Engineering segment continued to work with local universities to assess alternative environmental friendly solutions to manage spent garnet generated from blasting operations. In 2018, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia carried out research on the feasibility of using spent garnet as a replacement for asphalt. UniKL researchers investigated the reuse of spent garnet for peat stabilisation. All our new vessels equipped with Ballast Water Management Plan 2016 2017 2018 2019- 2020 BWTS came into force September 2017 A total of 3 vessels retrofitted with BWTS Additional 27 vessels to be retrofitted At our maritime academy in Melaka, the amount of recyclables collected increased by 20% in 2018 compared to the year earlier, following a waste assessment and the addition of recycling bins (also made of recycled materials) at convenient locations. In addition, the academy’s digital work system and digital filing were enhanced to eliminate the need for paper printing of procedures, work permits, reports, and inspection records. EFFLUENT MANAGEMENT A reduction of 7% was achieved in the volume of operational engine room effluent discharge in 2018 compared to 2017. Through the collation and tracking of oily water separator discharge data across the fleet, rectification of leakages was carried out promptly to reduce water and oil accumulation in the engine room. All MISC vessels have in place a Ballast Water Management Plan to reduce the risk of spreading non-native aquatic species into the marine environment. In order to comply with the Ballast Water Treatment Convention 2017, a Five-Year Ballast Water Management System Retrofitting Plan has been formulated. Retrofitting of our vessels with the treatment system started in 2017. Three vessels from our fleet have been retrofitted with the ballast water treatment (BWTS) systems, of which two were retrofitted in 2018. An additional 27 vessels had been identified for retrofitting in 2019 and 2020. All newbuild vessels of MISC delivered since 2016 are equipped with a ballast water treatment system. INTO THE FUTURE We have the ambition and will continue to work with global key players to explore new innovations needed to advance shipping decarbonisation and leverage on new digital technology to improve our operational and environmental efficiencies. We are exploring business opportunities related to the manufacture of offshore wind farms, as we already have the fabrication capabilities for this sector in our Marine and Heavy Engineering segment.
